What is the End Game?

I write this as I sit digesting the usual plethora of Fake News and less Fake News concerning the reopening of the American economy. Bear in mind that, with the exception of Canada (as usual with its fearful fragile people), the entire world has opened up after the hysterical overreaction to the cold virus of the last many months. Europe and Asia are good to go.

I have several liberal friends - avid CNN fans and Fauci worshippers of course. I have asked them, as I search for answers in the woke media, ‘What is the End Game in their fears’?

They express disgust with Americans and the world opening up. Naturally, they do not look at the small Canadian numbers, but instead obsess about the American numbers. They go out religiously with their masks on - despite the science showing no efficacy at all in both the nature of their type of masks and their almost fetish-like outdoor use. They love the Three Amigos - Trudeau, Ford and Tory - as they borrow against our children’s future. They have no worries about all of the collateral deaths and destruction from this shutdown.

My question to them is as follows; What would you decide if you were in a leadership position? Keep the economy shuttered endlessly? Keep the welfare flowing like beer in a late night last call pub frenzy? Where is the end? Where is the cost - benefit analysis that is part of every micro and macro decision in human affairs? What is the cost, and what is the benefit, of their sacrifice of everyone else’s livelihood in their fearful quest?

I am most arrested by the fact that they give no answer other than to say that the we should keep everything locked down until there is ‘not one death from Covid’.

Hello?

The astonishing part of it is the transparent self interest involved - all of them are old people afraid of their own mortality and willing to sacrifice their own children’s future to assuage their own irrational fears. I keep returning to this because it is a boomer leitmotiv - everyone must pay the price for their fear of any existential threat. Never mind that their parents, and in fact their children as well, have paid the price for their own cushy and self-indulgent lives.

Where is this hysteria heading? Masks until when? The economy shuttered until CNN pr MSNBC say it is ok to come outside - presumably only when Trump is out of office? Until there is a vaccine? Until there is a viable treatment? And what if people don’t choose to get the vaccine? And what if such a vaccine is months and months away? And what if the vaccine is only somewhat effective like the flu vaccine?

The point is that these naysayers and fear mongering people have no answer. They cannot put themselves in a position of responsibility in order to make a lucid decision. They wring their hands and dither and want to sit in the backseat instead of the front seat. Just as Lenin described it.

The present culture of fear, sociopathic paranoia and hysteria is a perfect backdrop for a future of Government social control about which liberals fantasize but even Orwell could not have imagined.. By the convoluted logic of these fearful people, this can never end. Does it end only when the Government says it is ok? And why do they hold this religious belief in the Government? What is it that makes people walk in the streets and ride bikes with masks? Is it really about science, or is it a badge of political wokeness?

I have tried to arrange a trip to the west coast recently. I called hotel proprietors, all of whom shared the Canadian distaste for business and disdain for customers. They all explained that daily temperature taking, masks, and mandatory daily disinfectant of the rooms are the order of the day. No use of pool or gym allowed, and if you are from Toronto it is all the worse for them. All that while charging a King’s ransom for the room, because of course only 50% occupancy is allowed by the Government.

Do we really imagine a dystopian future of unrelenting disinfectant and distance? Have we really forgotten the essence of what has made our species survive as a herd?
