RIP CBC
Having spent a long career working with the CBC in many capacities - as a performer, as a contractor, as a guest radio host and as a listener, I am here today to celebrate the conviction of one person who finally had the courage to tell the truth about the ‘national radio network’ - in actuality a tax-funded megaphone for Government idiocy.
The CBC was once a creative entity - decades ago. They produced many programmes in house, both in radio and television. They were even a credible news organization, if one can imagine such a time. Composers like Igor Stravinsky and performers like Glenn Gould were given creative license, journalists were actually free to report news instead of Government agendas, and programmes were often of a high quality as a result.
I can remember the CBC Radio Orchestra, featuring musicians from all over the country. In its heyday, the CBC produced concerts with a variety of music chosen for its inherent content, rather than political mandated groupthink. Performers were chosen for merit rather than woke ideological reasons. One can see many of these shows on Youtube if you care to search. CBC also had a recording label and produced many excellent recordings involving the great talent available in the country and beyond. They created original drama television series and plays.
They were an actual creative force that turned out many radio and television personalities - the list is impressive but it is also in the rear view mirror.
What happened?
The average bobble headed Canadian will tell you that nothing happened - such is the state of the poor benighted Canadian population. Canadians cling with tear filled eyes to the leaking rubber lifeboat of their beloved CBC like they do their so-called Healthcare system, which itself is in palliative care.
Some of the other Nanny State beneficiaries will shake their heads and say that any demise is related to ‘lack of enough Government funding’. It’s the old ‘more Government is more quality’ delusion that sits at the bedrock of Kanada’s rotting foundation.
Some still in possession of a functioning brain will see that the death of the CBC happened as much BECAUSE of the Government funding as for any other reason.
The person who pays the piper gets to call the tune.
I, and all other musicians, actors and writers, have experienced the gradual death of the CBC in real time. I have no idea where their enormous Government funding goes, since they have reduced any creative staff to a whimpering rump. It clearly is used primarily to purchase US programming and to create politburo style committees to make ‘creative’ decisions. There is not one Producer remaining there. The last conversation I had with a Producer consisted of him stating that all programming is done by ‘racially diverse committees’ and music is chosen ‘with race as the priority’. The sad part for me was that there was no lament in his voice.
Tara Henley is a rare example of a contemporary courageous Canadian. In this neo-Marxist climate of fear and lemming-like behaviour, she actually has the backbone and conviction to speak the truth and sacrifice her pay cheque in the process. The attached article should be required reading for all Canadians.
It is time to defund the CBC. Let it sink or swim on its own merits, or lack thereof.
